Dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 1960, 1 hr 27 mins (15)
Godard's first feature-length film, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, is one of the inaugural and best-known films of the French New Wave. Written with fellow New Wave director, François Truffaut, Breathless shocked contemporary audiences with its bold visual style and editing—much of which broke the rules of classical Hollywood cinema. Most notable of its innovations were jolting jump cuts, hand-held camera, and the fresh take on modern, urban life. In French with English subtitles.
"THE PARADOX OF WHY EXISTENTIAL HEROES MUST DO THE WRONG THING."
