Dir. Martin Scorsese, 1977, 2 hr 35 mins, (PG)
A love story is like a song. It's beautiful while it lasts. The day WWII ends, Jimmy, a selfish and smooth-talking musician, meets Francine, a lounge singer. From that moment on, their relationship grows into love as they struggle with their careers and aim for the top. A rare box office failure that has grown into a cult success, Scorsese intended New York, New York as an homage to Classical Hollywood musicals. For this reason, he designed the film's sets and storyline to be deliberately artificial.
"New York New York was shot in the 70's but strongly references early
Hollywood musicals. The film is great as a whole, but with regards to my
work I am particularly interested in the art- deco inspired sets."
