"I chose Clueless, Amy Heckerling’s 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, not especially because it was an influential film for me, but because the film and it’s theme mirror or reverse my project for Intervention/Decoration. Clueless is a nearly perfectly constructed film with a flawless performance by a 19-year old Alicia Silverstone. Superficially it is the transplantation of Austen’s late18th century England to late 20th century Beverly Hills that parallels Frome’s textile industry filtered through my particularly American sense of design and geometric repetition. In addition to the novel’s and film’s biting social commentary and universal joyride from heartbreak to happy ending, what is common to all is a melancholic loss: of an era, an industry, and a career that may have peaked at 19."
