Culloden selected by Ruth Ewan

Dir. Peter Watkins, 1964, 1 hr 15 mins

Watkins documentary for BBC was pioneering in its use of ordinary people in a reconstruction of their own history creating a memorable account of the infamous Anglo-Scottish conflict. Filmed in a style that deliberately mimicked television reporting of the Vietnam War and broadcast by the BBC in December 1964 during that conflict, Culloden, gives the historic genocide committed in the Highlands by British government troops a strikingly contemporary feel.

"Culloden is an important film to me because of its innovative use of non-professional actors and its portrayal of history, not as a remote past but as something real and relevant to the present day."
